How to start your career in cyber security

Choosing a career in cybersecurity can take you down many different career paths, and WOZ U is here to help with the training needed to begin that journey. You need on-job certifications from industries to improve your career path.

Three different cybersecurity career paths

Here are the three popular cyber security careers you need to be successful:

1.      Security Architect Career Path

A security architect is responsible for computer security, designing, building and implementing networks for a company. They also design complex security structures and ensure they function properly. The career path of a security architect needs you to earn a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, computer science, information technology or any other related field.

 You can also acquire relevant industry certifications from gaining equivalent experience. You can join the IT field as a network administrator, security administrator or systems where you can get promoted to a security analyst or security engineer and afterwards enter the security architect role.

2.      Security consultant

A security consultant is responsible for assessing the cybersecurity risks, problems and solutions for various companies, guiding them on how to secure and protect their data and physical capital. Its career path needs you to earn a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, computer science, information technology or any other related field. You can pursue general security or IT at an entry-level.

You need to advance to security engineer, administrator, auditor and analyst for you to earn mid-level roles. You also need to sharpen your cybersecurity skills with industrial certifications and advanced training for you to enter the security consultant role.

3.      Ethical Hackers/ Penetration Tester

A penetration tester looks at the tactics used by criminals and the weaknesses of the company’s applications, IT systems and networks which might expose your organization to the risk of cyber-attacks. Ethical hackers help companies to enhance their security posture. The career path of an ethical hacker needs you to train for a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, computer science, information technology or any other related field.
